Maldives Sea Turtles

Meet the Maldives’ Sea Turtles

Swimming with sea turtles appears on countless bucket lists and it’s not surprising that many of our guests want to encounter these beautiful marine creatures. Although all seven species of sea turtles are classed as endangered worldwide, in the Maldives there are healthy populations and sightings are common at many of the reefs used for snorkelling and scuba diving.

A holiday at Lily Beach Resort provides an opportunity to observe turtles in their natural habitat, especially when joining the Turtle Tour – you will take a short dhoni to snorkel at one of the reefs close by and search for turtles resting on the reef and swimming to the surface for air. The experience of a lifetime awaits but before you get ready to jump in, it’s important to remember a few simple rules to ensure the turtles don’t feel threatened by your presence.

  • Be as quiet as possible with minimal splashing and talking – you don’t want to scare it away!
  • Do not swim directly above the turtle – they need a clear path to be able to swim to the surface for their next breath.
  • Approach from the side and remain a respectful distance away – they will stay around for longer if not frightened.
  • Never chase turtles.
  • Please don’t touch the turtles.

You can prebook your Turtle Tour and many other exciting adventures before you even arrive – the Lily Beach App is the perfect holiday itinerary planning tool to ensure you don’t miss out on once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
